The Cat’s Out Of The Bag: One Republican Admits Voter ID Laws Are Meant to Suppress Democrats

Written by Annie-Rose Strasser

This weekend, Pennsylvania Republican House Leader Mike Turzai (R-PA) finally admitted what so many have speculated: Voter identification efforts are meant to suppress Democratic votes in this year’s election.

At the Republican State Committee meeting, Turzai took the stage and let slip the truth about why Republicans are so insistent on voter identification efforts — it will win Romney the election, he said:

“We are focused on making sure that we meet our obligations that we’ve talked about for years,” said Turzai in a speech to committee members Saturday. He mentioned the law among a laundry list of accomplishments made by the GOP-run legislature.

  1. So where is the quote where he says the voter ID law is meant to suppress Democrats? By what is quoted, it seems Turzai is saying the law is meant to prevent illegals from voting who would happen to vote for Obama, as well as curbing voter fraud which most can agree occurs more among Democrats (e.g. Indiana, 2008).

  2. Wow, what a horribly spun article. If you actually had done your job, you would have realized he simply said he's been upholding the law, and by upholding the law, Romney has a chance to win Pennsylvania. No where did he say anything about Voter ID being linked to Democrats, suppressing anybody, or Voter ID only there for Republicans to win.

    You'd expect a journalist to understand . . . I mean, "journalist".
